Darryl Stingley

The New England Patriots picked Stingley in the first round in 1973. He had 16 career TDs and a 2,450 combined yards rushing, receiving and returning both punts and kickoffs in the five seasons he played for them. .

His career, however, came to a startling halt in 1978. In a pre-season game, Stingley was hit by Oakland Raiders DB Jack Tatum. The hit broke his fourth and fifth vertebrae, ending his football career.(AP Photo)
